Hackberry is native to Minnesota and does well in a variety of soil conditions including compacted clay, dry or seasonally wet areas. This tree leafs out later than most trees in the spring. It is a great tree for wildlife and produces a small purple berry that ripens in September and usually stays on the tree until eaten by birds. Hackberry develops a vase-shaped canopy like an elm tree, and has interesting corky bark and yellow fall color. Full sun to part shade.
